Barrier Islands Center

Housed in a restored 1803 almshouse farm just off US-13, this is the place that explains the landscape you are driving through. The barrier islands off the seaside coast were once inhabited: villages, hotels, a resort at Hog Island with a hundred buildings. Storms and shifting sand took all of it, and families moved their houses to the mainland by barge rather than abandon them.

The exhibits use photographs, oral histories and salvaged objects to tell that story, and there is a decoy and workboat collection alongside.

Closed Sundays and Mondays, small admission fee, roughly forty-five minutes.
