Crim Dell Bridge

A steep-arched wooden footbridge over a wooded pond in the middle of the William & Mary campus, built in 1966 and comfortably the most photographed object on the Peninsula that isn't 250 years old.

Student tradition has accumulated around it in layers: cross it hand in hand and you are bound for life, cross it alone and you break the spell, and there is a considerably less romantic version involving being thrown off it. Padlocks have appeared on the railings in recent years. Benches sit at either end and the surrounding dell is genuinely pretty in autumn.

A five-minute detour from the Sunken Garden, free and open at all hours. Worth timing for morning light.
