Deering Estate
The 444-acre bayfront estate of Charles Deering (James's half-brother), with a 1922 Stone House, an older wood-frame inn, and one of the largest surviving remnants of pine rockland and tropical hardwood hammock in the county. Manatees often loiter in the boat basin in winter. Nature walks, canoe trips to Chicken Key and archaeological sites with 10,000-year-old evidence of habitation. Note: the Stone House has been closed for restoration, with reopening reported for 2027; check before visiting if the interiors are the priority.
