Dexter Grist Mill & Shawme Pond

A working water-powered gristmill at the outlet of Shawme Pond, originally built in the 1650s and restored in the 1960s. Guides run short tours of the mechanism during the season and you can buy stone-ground cornmeal milled on site.

Even if the mill is closed, the setting is the draw: the dam, the millpond and the church steeple line up into what is probably the single most photographed view in Sandwich. Parking is tight at the corner of Water and Main — the municipal lots a short walk away are easier.
