East Verde Picnic Area

A shaded riverside pull-off on the East Verde River, four miles north of Payson just off Highway 87. Tall ponderosa pines shade a handful of picnic tables beside the water, with interesting rock formations visible right from the parking area — wade in the river, cast for stocked trout, or follow the informal riverbank trail upstream.

It's a rustic, low-effort stop rather than a destination: gravel parking, a vault toilet, no drinking water, pack-it-in-pack-it-out. A Tonto Day Pass is required ($8 pre-purchased, $12 at the on-site fee machine). During monsoon season keep an eye on the weather — the river can rise fast below the Mogollon Rim.
