Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge

The southern tip of the peninsula, where every bird flying south down the Delmarva funnel piles up before making the crossing over open water. In peak autumn migration the numbers are extraordinary. The refuge occupies a former army base, and the trails run past concrete gun emplacements and a bunker turned observation platform with a view over salt marsh, maritime forest and the mouth of the bay.

Small visitor center, short well-marked loop trails, no fee.

Best in September and October. Bring insect repellent in warmer months.
