Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial

Unlike the other presidential memorials this is a 7.5 acre landscape rather than a building: four open-air granite rooms, one for each of FDR's terms, linked by waterfalls, pools and shaded walks along the Tidal Basin. Bronze sculptures show breadline figures from the Depression, a fireside chat listener, Eleanor Roosevelt and FDR with his dog Fala. A statue of Roosevelt in a wheelchair was added at the entrance in 2001 after lobbying by disability groups. Dedicated in 1997, it is the most tactile and least crowded of the big memorials and a good place to sit down on a long Mall day. Open 24 hours, free.
