General Sherman Tree

The General Sherman Tree, located in Sequoia National Park in California, is the largest tree in the world by volume.

It's a giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) in the Giant Forest grove, named in 1879 after Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. While not the tallest (that's a coastal redwood) or widest tree on Earth, its sheer volume of living wood makes it the largest single living organism by mass. It continues to grow — adding roughly a cubic foot of wood every year, more than the total volume of a 60-foot tall tree annually.
