Hampton Coliseum

A 1970 arena that looks like nothing else in the region: a folded white concrete crown rising out of a lake, lit at night, and widely considered one of the better pieces of mid-century modern architecture in Virginia. It was the first large multi-purpose venue in the state.

Its real fame is musical. The Grateful Dead played here so often and so well that the band and its followers called it the Mothership; the 1989 run is among the most traded live recordings in rock. Elvis, Led Zeppelin, Prince, the Rolling Stones and Metallica have all played the room, which holds around 13,500 and has a reputation for unusually good acoustics for its size.
