Monticello Graveyard

A small walled burial ground in the woods below the house, still owned and used by Jefferson's descendants. The obelisk at its centre marks Thomas Jefferson's grave and carries the epitaph he wrote himself — which lists the Declaration of Independence, the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom and the founding of the University of Virginia, but pointedly not the presidency.

The cemetery is gated, so you look in rather than walk through, but the obelisk stands close to the fence. It sits directly on the path between the house and the visitor center, which makes it an easy few-minute detour rather than a separate stop.
