National Museum of American History

The Smithsonian's museum of American culture and history, next door to Natural History. Its three million objects range from the Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that inspired the national anthem, to Dorothy's ruby slippers, Julia Child's kitchen, presidential artefacts and a large transport hall with locomotives and classic cars. About 3.8 million visitors a year.

For European visitors it is a compact way to see the icons of American everyday life in one place. Free entry. Two sculptures stand outside and there is a fountain on the north side of the building.
