Naval Station Norfolk Bus Tours
Norfolk is the largest naval base in the world — 6.4 km of waterfront, 18 km of piers and wharves, and home port to the Atlantic Fleet including several nuclear aircraft carriers. It is also entirely closed to the public, with one exception: a narrated bus tour that runs through the working base.
The hour-long tour is driven by base personnel and gets you along the carrier piers and the air station, close enough to see hull numbers and flight decks. What is in port changes daily and nobody can promise you a carrier, but the scale is the point either way. Commentary covers ship classes, deployments and base history rather than reciting statistics.
Practical: book ahead, bring photo ID (Real ID or passport for foreign visitors), and arrive early for the security check — no ID, no tour, no exceptions. Closed Sundays and Mondays, and cancelled outright during heightened security. Around $20. A harbour cruise from downtown Norfolk covers similar ground from the water if the bus is full.
