Obsidian Butte
A low black dome on the sea's south shore — one of the Salton Buttes, among the youngest volcanoes in California. Its slopes and the shoreline below glitter with obsidian, the volcanic glass free to collect, and the "beach" here is crushed shell and salt rather than sand. Remote and exposed, reached by farm and dirt roads.
