Saunders-Monticello Trail
A wide, beautifully engineered woodland path that climbs roughly 3 km from Kemper Park up the flank of Jefferson's mountain. Long stretches run on raised boardwalks through hardwood forest, with benches, picnic spots and a couple of ponds near the trailhead.
The gradient is gentle enough for strollers and casual walkers, and Carter Overlook near the upper end opens a view back across the Piedmont. Locals use it as their daily walk; visitors mostly use it as the scenic way up to the Monticello visitor center. Open from 7 a.m. to dusk, free, and dog-friendly on a leash.
