Skyline Caverns
A cave system beneath the northern tip of the Blue Ridge, opened to the public in 1939 and known worldwide for its anthodites — fragile white spikes of calcite that radiate in every direction from the cavern ceiling, sometimes called the orchids of the mineral kingdom. They are exceptionally rare, and Skyline Caverns holds one of the very few significant displays anywhere.
Guided tours run roughly an hour on paved, well-lit walkways past underground streams and a subterranean waterfall, at a constant 54°F. Above ground the site adds a mirror maze and a small ride-on train, which make it work as a half-day stop with children. Sits just outside the Front Royal entrance to Shenandoah National Park.
