Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument
A thousand-year-old cinder cone rimmed in red and orange rises from a moonscape of black lava flows and cinder fields just north of Flagstaff. The Lava Flow Trail loops through jagged basalt at the volcano's base; climbing the crater itself is prohibited, but neighboring Lenox Crater offers a legal cinder ascent.
