Upper Ferry

A free cable ferry across the Wicomico River, carrying a maximum of three cars and six passengers at a time. The river is only about 150 metres wide here, so the crossing takes roughly a minute, but the ferry service at this spot dates back to 1688, making it one of the oldest continuously operated river crossings in the United States. The flat-decked vessel is pulled along a submerged cable by a small pilot house, and the whole operation feels closer to a working farm implement than to public transport.

• No charge to cross
• Service pauses in high wind, ice or heavy river traffic, so keep the road route via Salisbury in mind as a fallback
