US Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial)

The 24 m bronze recreation of Joe Rosenthal's photograph of six Marines raising the flag on Mount Suribachi in 1945, dedicated in 1954 on a rise just north of Arlington National Cemetery. The flag flies here 24 hours a day by presidential proclamation. Beyond the memorial itself, the site has one of the best free views of the Washington skyline: the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and Capitol line up almost perfectly across the river, especially at sunset and after dark. On Tuesday evenings in summer the Marine Corps holds a free sunset parade with the Silent Drill Platoon. Free parking along Marshall Drive; allow 20 minutes.
