Venetian Pool
An 820,000-gallon public swimming pool carved from a 1920s coral-rock quarry and dressed up by George Merrick as a Venetian lagoon: waterfalls, caves, arched bridges, a sandy beach and loggias with striped poles. Fed daily by spring water from the aquifer, so it is cold and crystal clear. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the only swimming pool with that distinction. Closed Mondays and for part of winter; some features (caves, waterfalls) have been under renovation intermittently, so check the current status.
