Visitation Hotel Frederick, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel

The first hotel to open in downtown Frederick in fifty years, and the most interesting building in town to sleep in.

The complex began in 1824 as a monastery and girls' school and was run by the Sisters of the Visitation from 1845 until the academy finally closed in 2016. It sat empty until a twenty-million-dollar adaptive reuse, carried out in consultation with the National Park Service and the Maryland Historical Trust, turned it into a 65-room boutique hotel that opened in December 2024. The almost two-hundred-year-old brick exterior and the 1851 chapel survive; the interiors are pared back and austere in a way that suits the building's former life. It has since been admitted to Historic Hotels of America.

Food is a genuine draw rather than a hotel amenity: the dining concept comes from Frederick-raised chef Bryan Voltaggio with his brother Michael, spanning a tavern, an all-day café and the Academy Ballroom event space.

Practical notes

• Reception is on the second floor and valet parking is signposted from Church Street; three public garages sit within three blocks if self-parking is preferred
• Room sizes vary sharply — the converted lower-level rooms are compact, upper-floor executive rooms are generous
• Rooms above and near the restaurant pick up noise on busy evenings; ask when booking if that matters
• Steps from Church Street, Baker Park and the Carroll Creek promenade — the whole historic district is on foot from the door
